Why Goalies Are Different: A Love Letter to the Crease

Why Goalies Are Different: A Love Letter to the Crease

Ryan Fisher

Every hockey team has one player who’s different from everyone else on the ice.

They show up early. They carry the biggest bag. They have a routine nobody else understands, and probably shouldn’t ask about. They stand alone in a painted blue box while everyone else gets to skate away from their mistakes.

That’s the goalie. And if you’ve ever been one, you know: it’s not a position. It’s a lifestyle.

The loneliest spot in the rink

Forwards score goals. Defence breaks up plays. Goalies get remembered for the one that got by.

You can make 30 saves and lose 1–0. You can have the game of your life and nobody mentions it in the parking lot. Goaltending asks you to be calm when everything is coming at you, to forget the last goal before the next shot, and to keep showing up anyway.

That takes a different kind of person. Patient. Stubborn. A little bit weird. In the best way.

Where Tendy Wear came from

I started playing goal back in Timbits. It came naturally to me, and from the first time I stepped into the crease, I never wanted to go back out. Since then, goaltending has been a huge part of my life: the early ice times, the long tournament weekends, the teammates and the people who get what it means to stand in net. But in all those years, I never found apparel that was actually about us. There was team gear and player merch everywhere, but nothing that represented goalies, the position that’s unlike any other on the ice.

So we made it ourselves.

Tendy Wear was born during COVID with one goal: apparel made for goalies and the hockey fans who love them. Because goaltending is cool, and it’s about time our gear showed it.

Built for goalies, by goalies

That line isn’t a slogan we picked because it sounded good. It’s the whole point.

Everything we make starts with how goalies actually live: cold rinks at 6 a.m., long tournament weekends, the walk from the dressing room to the car with a bag that weighs more than you do. Our hoodies are made to be warm and comfortable for exactly that. Our toques and dad hats are made for the goalie parents shivering in the stands, too.

We care about quality because goalies care about details. We notice how gear fits, how it feels, and whether it holds up. We figured our apparel should meet the same standard.

For the ones in the crease

If you’re a goalie, this is for you: the early ice times, the post-whistle pads stack you didn’t need to make, the save nobody saw but your teammates did.

If you’re a goalie parent, this is for you too. You’ve driven the miles, hauled the bag and watched every shot with your heart in your throat.

And if you just love the position, welcome. You’re one of us.

Built for the crease. Built for goalies, by goalies.
